Each workshop in this series is designed to empower participants with knowledge and practical tools to support their nonprofit governance work. Attendees will deepen their understanding and discover objective strategies to refine and update their organization’s bylaws, policies, and governance methods..

Board Decision Making and Conflict of Interest (Thursday, October 12, 5:30-8:30pm)

This workshop dives into the decision-making dynamics of nonprofit Boards and how Conflict Of Interest (COI) plays in. We explore what should be incorporated in bylaws and policies for Alberta Societies. Ideal for existing or potential nonprofit Board members and those aiming to refine their bylaws, attendees will understand the nature of Board decision processes and the basics of COI. Note: The session won’t address Board position descriptions or committee structures.

Decoding Nonprofit Bylaws (Friday, October 13, 9:00am-12:00pm)

This session is designed for newcomers preparing to file bylaws under the Alberta Societies Act and those aiming to refine existing ones. Attendees will grasp the legal significance of bylaws, understand the process of filing and amending them, and be equipped with knowledge of their primary content essentials.

Defining Membership in Bylaws: How to Do it and Why it Matters (Friday, October 13, 1:00-4:00pm)

Explore the nuances of determining nonprofit membership criteria and its impact on governance and operations. This workshop highlights the choices available in the Alberta Societies Act regarding membership and offers guidance on vital considerations for creating or amending bylaws. It’s a must-attend for those contemplating membership limitations, formulating bylaws for a new nonprofit under the Alberta Societies Act, or revising existing bylaws. Attendees will gain insights into the role of membership criteria in governance and understand bylaw essentials for defining member eligibility. Note: Addressing rule-breaking members is outside the workshop’s scope.

Mastering AGMs and Member Engagement for Nonprofits (Saturday, October 14, 9:00am-12:00pm)

Concluding our series, we will dive into the significance of Annual General Meetings (AGMs) as an instrument for enhancing member engagement and meeting Alberta Societies Act requirements. This session is ideal for those seeking clarity on AGM-related bylaws, aiming to strengthen member involvement, or addressing membership concerns. Attendees will learn the essentials of nonprofit bylaws related to AGMs and understand AGMs’ role in member engagement. Note: Special General Meetings are not covered.
